Washington State is home to many different types of ants, including Odorous house ants, Pavement ants, Moisture ants, and Carpenter ants. Here’s what you need to know about each type:
Odorous house ants
Odorous house ants, also known as sugar ants, can take over your home at any time. They build nests indoors as well as outdoors and will forage your property as well as your home for starches, including honeydew created from the aphids in the garden and almost anything else that you drop on the floor. Treatment for Odorous house ants must be done in a way that doesn’t associate their trails with a toxic environment. Using a non-repellant and slow-acting treatment approach is needed to avoid budding or splitting. When this happens, the ants can overtake the entire home very quickly. That’s why it’s highly recommended to have a trained and licensed professional perform the treatment to ensure it’s effective and done in the right way.
Pavement ants
Pavement ants commonly nest outdoors under stones, cracks in the pavement, and along curbs. They also nest indoors under floors and inside walls. Easily recognizable by the small sand mounds that you may see all over the cracks in your driveway when the weather gets warm. Pavement ants will invade homes and buildings, a lot of times coming up from under the carpet and cracks along the floor. Pavement ants will eat almost anything, including honeydew from the aphids, nectar, fruits, seeds, and insects.
Carpenter ants
Carpenter ants can be easily mistaken for termites. These social insects usually have many sub-colonies around the property and will destroy the wood and foundation in your home as they excavate the wood in the structure. Carpenter ants are the largest type of ants in Washington State, and we have many different kinds of carpenter ants around this area. To help prevent colonies in the first place, we recommend removing stumps, logs, and waste wood from your property. We also recommend having all vegetation cut back from your home, removing easy pathways to the structure. Inspection and treatment for carpenter ants are more aggressive than the other ants that we are dealing with.
